New York - Former world No.1 Lleyton Hewitt made his last appearance at the US Open Thursday after losing to 2nd round against his compatriot Bernard Tomic.

The Australian 34 year old was defeated in five sets 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 5-7, 7-5, but came close to surprise her younger than 12 years, the world 24th.

He not only equalized at two sets all after losing the first two sets, but he did lead the race in the fifth and final round.

Hewitt, who will retire after the Australian Open in January 2016, even led 5-4, but did not manage to realize his advantage and to concede the last three games.

The Australian, winner in his career of 30 ATP titles including two Grand Slam tournaments, won the US Open in 2001 and had reached and lost the final in 2004.

Now ranked in the 355th place worldwide, he had received an invitation to enter the main draw.

He had booked their 2nd round after abandoning his opponent the first round, the Kazakh Aleksandr Nedovyesov.

He played in only 13 games in 2015, with a total of four wins.

His last major objective is the Davis Cup: Australia faces indeed mid-September in Glasgow (Scotland) Britain's Andy Murray for a place in the final.

On leaving the court, Hewitt was warmly applauded and winner of the day, with whom he trains regularly, honored him.

"It was hard for me to prepare for this game. I have great admiration for him, he again proved tonight why he was a legend in our sport," said Tomic.
